God's Word

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

He will always reward your labor with justice, mercy, and love.

October 13, 2023

Good morning, faithful brothers and sisters! I’d like to tell you a story about a young man who was walking through a farmer’s market one day. As he walked through the bustling market, the young man noticed something very strange. Every vendor had a huge pile of produce in front of their stall, and each pile was exactly the same size. A single pea, a single carrot, a single tomato, and a single apple. The young man thought to himself, “What an odd coincidence.”

This story is an apt metaphor for today’s scripture from St. Matthew 20. In this passage, Jesus tells us that the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who pays his workers the same wage, regardless of how long they’ve been working for him. The householder pays each worker the same amount, from those who have worked all day to those who have only worked one hour.

Today I want to speak to you about three key ideas from this passage: God’s unwavering justice, His infinite mercy, and His undying love.

First, let’s talk about God’s unwavering justice. In this passage, Jesus teaches us that God will always be just and fair when it comes to rewarding our labor. He will judge us on our faithfulness and hard work, not on how long we’ve been working for Him. This is an important lesson for us to remember because it reminds us that God will always reward us according to our efforts and not our time.

Second, let’s talk about God’s infinite mercy. This is a beautiful aspect of this passage because it teaches us that no matter how long we’ve been working for God, He will always have mercy on us and forgive our sins. Even if we’ve only been working for Him for one hour, He will still forgive us and give us grace. This teaches us that God is a loving and forgiving God who is always willing to give us a second chance.

Finally, let’s talk about God’s undying love. This aspect of the passage reminds us that no matter how long we’ve been working for God, He will always love us unconditionally. He will never stop loving us and He will always be there for us no matter what. This teaches us that even when we feel like we’ve let Him down or failed Him in some way, He will still love us just the same.

In conclusion, my brothers and sisters, I urge you to remember the lessons from this passage today: God’s unwavering justice, His infinite mercy, and His undying love. As Paul says in Romans 8:38-39 ‘For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’

Today my faithful brothers and sisters I leave you with this thought: No matter how much time has passed since you started working for God, He will always reward your labor with justice, mercy, and love - so keep working hard and trust in Him!
